1. Situation · The Adaptive Problem
Influence is the attempt by one organism to change another’s behavior to the influencer’s benefit — ancient and ubiquitous. Wherever two parties’ interests overlap but do not perfectly coincide, selection favors those who can shift others in their own favor, and simultaneously favors those who resist being shifted against their interest. Two consequences organize the entire manual:
Influence rides on cooperation. The channels manipulation exploits — trust, communication, attachment, deference — exist because cooperation is enormously profitable. You cannot exploit a signal no one sends or a trust no one extends. Manipulation is parasitic on a genuinely adaptive social infrastructure. Influence provokes counter-influence. Because being manipulated is costly, selection builds defenses — skepticism, verification, reputation-tracking. Influence and resistance co-evolve in an arms race, which means every technique has, in principle, a countermeasure.
The cooperation substrate manipulation targets
Evolutionary biology identifies several routes to stable cooperation — each corresponds to a family of exploits. Kin selection (Hamilton, 1964) built a bias to help “family” — exploited by manufactured pseudo-kinship (“brothers and sisters,” identity fusion T9.10). Reciprocal altruism (Trivers, 1971) installed a felt debt for unrepaid favors — the engine of Category 5 (free samples T5.1, gift-before-ask T5.14). Indirect reciprocity / reputation (Nowak, 2006) made us intensely reputation-sensitive — counterfeited by fake social proof (T3.1, astroturfing T3.14). And repeated-game reciprocity (Axelrod, 1984) yields the deepest lesson: manipulation depends on collapsing the game from repeated to one-shot. Urgency, false scarcity, and “act now” framing all work by removing the future — the shadow of repeated interaction that would otherwise deter a cheat.

2. Enemy Forces · Signals & Deception
If cooperation is the substrate, signaling is the medium — and its central problem is honesty: what keeps signals reliable when senders benefit from lying? Costly signaling (Zahavi’s handicap principle; Grafen, 1990; Spence’s Nobel job-market model, 1973) answers: a signal stays honest when it is costly in a way only high-quality senders can afford. Genuine expertise, verifiable track records, and real credentials are costly signals; their manipulative counterfeits mimic the appearance of cost without paying it — fake credentials (T2.1), the lab-coat effect (T2.3), luxury-office staging (T2.4).
The defender’s core analytic move is to ask, of any impressive display: is this an index (causally bound to the real quality, hard to fake), a costly signal (affordable only to real quality), or a cheap signal (a fakeable correlate)? A surgeon’s live operating record is near-index; a title on a business card is a cheap signal.

Dawkins & Krebs (1978) reframed animal signals not as neutral information transfer but as manipulation — attempts to exploit a receiver’s nervous system — with receivers evolving “sales resistance.” Deception in nature echoes human tactics precisely: mimicry (a hoverfly copies a wasp; a phishing site copies a bank, T14.2) — the mimic copies appearance but not independent provenance; bluffing (a cornered animal puffs up; a con inflates fake demand, T21.20) — bluffs collapse under patient testing; exploiting sensory biases via superstimuli — down-weight intensity as evidence. The single most useful habit: discount cheap signals; demand costly, verifiable ones.
3. Threat Picture · Our Detection Systems
Because deception is costly to victims, selection builds counter-espionage — the evolutionary basis for every detection method in the manual, and precisely what techniques try to defeat. Epistemic vigilance (Sperber et al., 2010): we vet source reliability and message coherence; authority mimicry (Cat 2) attacks source vigilance, while truth-salting a lie with small truths (T11.3) attacks content vigilance. Cheater detection (Cosmides & Tooby): humans reason far better about “who took the benefit without paying” than about abstract logic — so defensive training works best framed as cheater-spotting. Error management (Haselton & Nettle, 2006): our threat systems are tuned for asymmetric error costs, not accuracy — ancestrally a false alarm was cheap and a missed predator fatal — so fear-based manipulation (T7.1, T1.5) hijacks a system built to over-react. Reputation-policing (Dunbar’s gossip): distributed, independent reputation is hard to fake; centralized or single-source reputation is not.
Self-deception: the manipulator inside
Trivers’s theory holds that the best way to deceive others convincingly is to first deceive yourself — a sincere believer emits no “tells” [C2–C3, contested]. Two hard lessons follow: the most persuasive manipulators may not experience themselves as lying, so the manual privileges verification of claims over reading of character — demeanor is a corruptible channel; and your own motivated reasoning is an inside accomplice — so apply the most scrutiny to the messages you most want to be true.
4. Terrain Shift · Evolutionary Mismatch
Human social cognition was calibrated in small, face-to-face groups. Modern influence operates in an environment that faculty was never designed for — and the gap is where engineered manipulation gets its power. Supernormal stimuli (Tinbergen; Barrett, 2010): our response systems have no built-in ceiling for signals tuned beyond anything ancestral — hyper-palatable food, idealized bodies (T1.8), outrage-optimized feeds (T1.6). Scale & anonymity break the repeated game: online actors are anonymous, interactions one-shot, reputation faked or reset (clone accounts T24.22) — the structural reason internet fraud (Cat 24) is so prevalent. Speed & volume attack reflection: manufactured urgency denies time, and the “firehose of falsehood” (Paul & Matthews, 2016) denies the ability to check. Parasocial bonding (T10.13) manufactures one-sided intimacy at scale, underwriting influencer marketing and romance fraud (T24.1).
