1. Situation · The Terrain
Influence has a strict prerequisite structure: before a message can be believed it must be understood; before understood, perceived; before perceived, attended. Attention is the chokepoint through which all influence must pass — and that hands the defender a strategic asset: attention is defensible at the perimeter. A manipulation that never captures your attention never runs. It is why advertising, platforms, propaganda, and fraud invest so heavily upstream, in the first two seconds, before any argument is made.
The architecture: a genuine bottleneck
Processing capacity is sharply limited, so selection is mandatory [C5]. Whatever wins the bottleneck monopolizes cognition; what loses it is often not consciously registered at all. Two robust phenomena prove the cost of selection: inattentional blindness (observers counting passes miss a person in a gorilla suit — Simons & Chabris, 1999) and change blindness (large scene changes go undetected when transient cues are masked) [C5]. The sobering implication: you do not notice what you fail to attend to — and do not notice that you failed to notice. Manipulators exploit this by loading attention deliberately (misdirection T12.4, distraction T13.10). The countermeasure is structural, not perceptual: you cannot “look harder” for what you’re blind to, but you can slow down and ask what is being kept off my screen?
Two control systems: the battleground
Essentially all capture technique is an attempt to make one attention system defeat the other (Posner, 1980) [C5]. Bottom-up capture is fast, cheap, involuntary, and hard to override — triggered by salient features (onset, motion, threat). Top-down control is voluntary, slow, effortful, and easily exhausted. The asymmetry is the whole game: manipulative design triggers involuntary bottom-up capture, then exploits the captured moment before deliberate control reasserts itself.

2. Enemy Forces · What Captures Automatically
Certain stimulus properties reliably win the bottom-up channel — the raw materials of Category 1. The analyst’s aim is to recognize when a salience driver is doing persuasive work the underlying substance does not warrant.

Significance-based capture
Beyond perceptual salience, attention is biased by significance — stimuli tagged as threatening, moral, or rewarding. Threat capture and negativity bias: attention is drawn faster to threat, and “bad is stronger than good” (Öhman et al., 2001; Baumeister et al., 2001) [C4] — the engine behind fear headlines (T1.5) and doomscrolling (T19.10). Moral-outrage capture: outrage-laden content captures attention and drives sharing, so engagement-optimized systems favor it (rage bait, T1.6) — your outrage is the product being harvested. Value-driven capture: cues previously paired with reward grab attention even when irrelevant (Anderson et al., 2011) [C4] — the substrate of variable-reward design and the pull of an intermittently rewarding phone (T18.1, T18.4).
The attention economy: scarcity weaponized at scale
These properties are ancient; what is new is an industry built to exploit them at planetary scale. Simon (1971) named the principle — “a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention” [C4]. Three modern features convert ordinary biases into systematic vulnerabilities: superstimuli (content engineered more extreme than anything natural), algorithmic optimization (recommenders converging on whatever captures best — often the outrageous and divisive, T19.9), and friction removal (infinite scroll T18.6, autoplay T18.12, and variable rewards that retain captured attention).
