1. Situation · The Terrain
The naïve view — that the senses deliver an accurate copy of reality to a passive observer — is false. Perception is inference: the brain combines noisy, incomplete input with prior expectations to construct its best guess about what is out there. Helmholtz called this “unconscious inference” (Helmholtz, 1867); modern science formalizes it as predictive processing (Gregory, 1997; Clark, 2013; Friston, 2010) [C4]. Two consequences matter: prior expectation fills ambiguous input — so whoever controls the expectations partly controls the percept — and the construction is invisible. We experience only the output as immediate and given. Illusions are the standing proof: knowing the Müller-Lyer lines are equal does not make them look equal. Perception is cognitively impenetrable, so “just look more carefully” is an unreliable defense.
Perception is relative: the psychophysics of comparison
Perception encodes differences and ratios, not absolutes. The just-noticeable difference is a roughly constant proportion of baseline (Weber’s law); sensation grows with the logarithm (Fechner, 1860) or a power function (Stevens, 1957) of intensity, not linearly [C4]. A candle in a dark room is dramatic; the same candle in a bright room is imperceptible. This relativity is the sensory root of contrast and anchoring: whoever sets the reference shapes the judgment. A price feels high or low only relative to an anchor.
Gestalt organization: layout as grammar
The Gestalt principles (Wertheimer, 1923; Koffka, 1935) — figure-ground, proximity, similarity, closure, continuity — are the grammar of visual design [C4]. Honest design uses them to make hierarchy obvious; deceptive design (dark patterns, T19.15) inverts them, making a costly opt-in look like the safe primary choice and rendering “decline” perceptually recessive. The path of least visual resistance is engineered to benefit the designer.

2. Enemy Forces · How Expectation Rewrites Experience
The most striking demonstrations show that labels, prices, and brands change not just judgments but the experienced sensory quality itself — and even its neural signature. Plassmann et al. (2008) found the same wine, labeled with a higher price, was experienced as more pleasant and produced greater activity in pleasure-coding brain regions [C4]; the price changed the experience, not merely the rating. Expectation set in advance reshapes taste (Lee, Frederick & Ariely, 2006; Morrot et al., 2001) [C3], and a discounted energy drink literally “works” less well — a marketing placebo (Shiv, Carmon & Ariely, 2005) [C3]. Brand imagery, professional presentation, and packaging are expectation-setters behind luxury branding (T16.3), professional-appearance trust cues (T11.14), and security theater (T11.17).
The senses are also fused, not independent: the McGurk effect shows seeing lip movements changes which sound is heard (McGurk & MacDonald, 1976) [C4]. “Sensory marketing” exploits this integration (Krishna, 2012) — music tempo alters spend, ambient scent shifts evaluation, weight cues quality [C3]. Evidence discipline: specific color-emotion claims are culturally variable and weakly supported [C2–C3]; the defensible claim is that sensory cues set expectations, not that any color triggers a fixed emotion.

3. Threat Picture · Synthetic Evidence & Engineered Environments
Because we treat perception as ground truth, fabricated perceptual evidence is unusually persuasive — this is the highest-risk region. Seeing and hearing feel like direct access, so doctored images (T12.20), misleading charts (T12.19), decontextualized media (T12.17), and AI deepfakes (T12.9, T12.21) inherit an unearned credibility. Perceptual acuity cannot be the defense — synthetic media increasingly defeats the naked eye — so defense must be provenance- and channel-based: ask not “does it look real?” but “where did it come from and can I trace it?”; confirm significant claims through a channel the source does not control; and elevate skepticism with stakes and emotion. Generative tools have collapsed the cost of forgery, shifting the burden from detection to provenance.
Framing scales from single stimuli to whole engineered environments. The casino is the paradigm case (Schüll, 2012): windowless floors, absent clocks, labyrinthine layouts dissolve the perception of time and sustain play [C1 operational / C3 scholarly]. The principle generalizes to digital interfaces that remove temporal landmarks (infinite scroll T18.6, autoplay T18.12). Finally, calibrate fears to evidence: strong-form subliminal persuasion is largely myth — the “eat popcorn” claim was a fabrication Vicary admitted; subliminal self-help shows no effect beyond expectation (Greenwald et al., 1991) [C4]. Many social-priming effects failed replication (T25.3) [contested, C3]. The real work is done by fully visible supraliminal framing in plain sight.
