1. Situation · The Terrain
The foundational, still-astonishing finding is how little it takes to make “us.” In the minimal group paradigm, Tajfel and colleagues assigned participants to groups on trivialities — a coin toss, a painting preference, a dot-estimate — with no contact, interest, history, or stake, and participants reliably favored their own group even at a cost to absolute gain (Tajfel, 1970; Tajfel, Billig, Bundy & Flament, 1971) [C4]. Social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) explains why: part of the self is derived from group memberships, so we are motivated to see our in-groups as superior — a route to self-esteem [C4]. Three severe implications follow: loyalty can be conjured from nothing; attacks on the group are processed as attacks on the self (§2.8); and self-esteem can be manufactured cheaply by supplying an out-group to feel superior to — the structural basis of scapegoating.
The biases the line creates
Once the line is drawn, cognition reorganizes. Out-group homogeneity: we see “our” members as varied individuals but “them” as interchangeable and alike (Quattrone & Jones, 1980; Park & Rothbart, 1982) [C3–C4], which makes stereotyping easy. Attribution asymmetry (the ultimate attribution error): we credit in-group good acts to character and excuse bad ones as situational, reversing it for the out-group (Pettigrew, 1979) [C3]. Biased evaluation of identical evidence: partisans watching the same game each saw the other side commit more fouls (Hastorf & Cantril, 1954) [C3]. The unifying lesson: bias does not feel like bias — it feels like accurate perception, which is precisely why manufactured lines work.
Coalition-detection and polarization
The system is hair-trigger because coalition-detection is a specialized, evolved feature. Kurzban, Tooby & Cosmides (2001) showed the mind automatically encodes who is allied with whom, and that this is flexible — race was used as an alliance cue only until a different coalition structure was made visible, at which point encoding-by-race dropped sharply [C3]. The system tracks coalitions, not fixed categories — so it is reprogrammable: a manipulator who supplies new “us/them” cues can redraw the line (but the same flexibility means it can be redrawn toward inclusion). Groups also radicalize on their own: after discussion with like-minded others, a group’s average position grows more extreme — group polarization (Isenberg, 1986; Myers & Lamm, 1976; Sunstein, 2009) [C3–C4], driven by lopsided argument pools and status-seeking within the group. Engineering homogeneous, dissent-free enclaves reliably radicalizes without persuading any individual.
2. Enemy Forces · The Manufactured Enemy
The most dangerous application is the deliberate construction of an out-group as a threat — the engine of us-vs-them propaganda (Cat 23). A manufactured enemy binds the in-group, displaces blame, justifies extraordinary measures, and makes the manufacturer indispensable as protector. Kept at the level of what a target observes: othering portrays the target group as different in kind and less than human, switching off moral restraint (dehumanization via disgust; Ch. 5); scapegoating attributes many grievances to one group ("they are why things are bad for us"); threat inflation exaggerates the enemy’s power to hold the in-group in fear (§2.3); and purity/loyalty policing recodes questioning as siding with the enemy, sealing the group against correction. The defensive signatures are learnable: manufactured enmity relies on a homogeneous, dehumanized portrayal, forbids verification, supplies one enemy for many grievances, and escalates over time.
Two constructive correctives close the section. Robbers Cave (Sherif et al., 1961) showed competition breeds enmity — and that mere contact did not cure it; hostility receded only when superordinate goals both groups needed but neither could achieve alone were introduced [C3]. Contact alone is not enough (the contact hypothesis requires equal status, common goals, cooperation, institutional support; Allport, 1954; Pettigrew & Tropp, 2006) [C3–C4]. And deindividuation is contested: the popular “anonymity strips conscience” account has weak support; Postmes & Spears (1998) and the SIDE model find that anonymity and immersion amplify conformity to the group’s salient norm rather than remove norms (Reicher, Spears & Postmes, 1995) [C3]. So a manipulator who controls the salient norm gets amplified compliance from an anonymous crowd — online or off.
