Two routes to belief (the ELM)
Persuasion runs on two routes. Petty and Cacioppo’s Elaboration Likelihood Model distinguishes a central route — effortful scrutiny of argument quality — from a peripheral route, where attitudes are shaped by simple cues (source polish, apparent expertise, sheer number of arguments, confidence) without evaluating substance (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) [C4]. Which route operates depends on motivation and ability to think; central-route attitudes are more durable. The manipulative move is precise: lower elaboration — via distraction, time pressure, overload, or emotional arousal — so peripheral cues carry the day. The defense inverts it: raise your own elaboration exactly when someone seems to be lowering it.
Motivated reasoning and confirmation bias
Belief is not disinterested. Kunda’s motivated reasoning shows goals bias the process: we apply lax scrutiny to congenial claims and stringent scrutiny to uncongenial ones, building a justification that feels rational while keeping “an illusion of objectivity” (Kunda, 1990) [C4]. We believe what we can justify wishing to believe — the deepest reason belief is manipulable, and the tie to identity-protective cognition (Ch. 11), where analytical skill can make defense worse. Confirmation bias is the broader, largely unintentional tendency to seek, notice, interpret, and remember information that confirms priors (Nickerson, 1998) [C4]. Manipulators exploit it by feeding confirmation — supplying only agreeing information (filter-bubble and radicalization pipelines). The counter runs against the grain: deliberately seek disconfirmation and diverse sources.
The illusory-truth effect: repetition manufactures belief
The single most-exploited fact here: repetition makes statements feel truer, independent of accuracy. Hasher, Goldstein, and Toppino first demonstrated the illusory-truth effect — repeated statements were judged more true simply for being repeated (Hasher, Goldstein & Toppino, 1977) [C4]. The mechanism is processing fluency: the mind misreads familiar-and-easy as true. Alarmingly, it occurs even when people know better — repetition increased belief in falsehoods among those who possessed the correct knowledge (Fazio et al., 2015) [C4]. Its cousin mere exposure increases liking (Zajonc, 1968) [C4]. Together these underwrite repetition drumbeats (T13.5 / T23.5), the “big lie,” and illusory truth as a named exploit (T8.15). One durable rule overrides the fluency signal: familiarity is not verification.

2. Enemy Forces · Why Belief Resists & How It Scales
Beliefs resist correction — but “backfire” is overstated
The continued-influence effect is the well-replicated finding that misinformation keeps shaping inferences even after a correction is seen, understood, and accepted — the discredited claim colors reasoning, especially when it fits a causal story (Lewandowsky et al., 2012) [C4]. A related but contested idea deserves care: early work suggested a backfire effect, that correcting could strengthen a false belief among the most committed (Nyhan & Reifler, 2010) [C3]. Subsequent larger studies generally find corrections reduce false beliefs on average and that backfire is rare and weak (Wood & Porter, 2019; Ecker et al., 2022) [contested; C3]. The defensively important conclusion is the opposite of the folk version: corrections mostly work and are worth doing — but must be done well (repeat the correction, supply a plausible alternative explanation, avoid needlessly restating the myth).
Saturation and overload: the “firehose”
Repetition and overload combine into industrial-scale manipulation. The RAND analysis of the Russian “firehose of falsehood” model (Paul & Matthews, 2016) describes two defining features: it is high-volume and multichannel (a torrent that exploits illusory truth and the “quantity implies credibility” heuristic) and shameless about consistency — not committed to being internally consistent or to reality [C3, policy source]. Contradiction is a feature: a flood of inconsistent claims need not have any single one believed; it need only exhaust scrutiny and induce “who can even know anymore?” This maps to information flooding (T13.4 ★; firehose variant T13.19; mechanism: cognitive overload §2.18). Manufactured doubt (T13.18, “doubt is our product”) is the complement. The counter inverts the attack’s logic: slow down and narrow to a few independently vetted sources; treat induced “nothing is knowable” fatigue as the intended product, not a true description of reality.

Thought reform (recognition level)
At the far end lies coordinated reconstruction of a whole belief system. Lifton’s study of coercive persuasion identified recurring conditions — control of the information environment, demands for confession/self-criticism, a claimed monopoly on truth (“sacred science”), loaded thought-stopping language, subordination to doctrine (Lifton, 1961) [C3]. What distinguishes it is convergence: not one lever but many applied over time (T22.21). Treated strictly at recognition level: the tells are a controlled information environment, discouraged outside contact, a forbidden-to-question doctrine, thought-stopping slogans, and reality routed through one group or leader. The protective principle is the same as identity capture — preserve outside information and relationships, and seek professional exit-oriented support.
3. Friendly Forces · Building Resistance
Because belief is easier to install than remove, the highest-leverage defense is prevention. McGuire’s inoculation theory proposed, by analogy to vaccination, that pre-exposing people to a weakened form of an attack — a forewarning plus a refuted small dose — confers resistance to the full-strength version by prompting them to generate their own counter-arguments (McGuire, 1964) [C4]. Modern pre-bunking operationalizes this: inoculating against a specific technique preserved accurate belief (van der Linden et al., 2017) [C3], and technique-based inoculation — teaching the manipulative moves (false dichotomies, scapegoating, incoherence, fake experts) rather than debunking individual claims — generalizes across topics, as shown with the “Bad News” game and short videos (Roozenbeek & van der Linden, 2019) [C3]. Inoculation is the taxonomy’s flagship defense (T25.17 ★).
A second evidence-based defense targets evaluation: lateral reading. Wineburg and McGrew found professional fact-checkers assess credibility not by reading down a page (staying on the site, the peripheral cues manipulators control) but by reading laterally — leaving immediately to see what independent sources say about it (Wineburg & McGrew, 2019) [C3]. Complementing this, brief accuracy prompts — nudging people to consider whether a headline is true before sharing — measurably reduce misinformation spread, because inattention (not only motivated belief) drives much of it (Pennycook et al., 2021) [C3]. The positive toolkit: pre-bunk, read laterally, and pause for accuracy.
