1. Situation · The Terrain
Contemporary habit science makes a sharp distinction the everyday word blurs. A habit is not “something you do often” — it is a learned association between a context cue and a response that activates automatically, with little dependence on the current goal (Wood & Neal, 2007; Wood & Rünger, 2016) [C4]. Three features define it: it is cue-triggered (launched by a time, place, preceding action, feeling, or object — not a fresh decision); it is automatic (fast, effortless, often noticed only afterward); and it is goal-independent. In the classic demonstration, cinema-goers with a strong popcorn habit ate the same amount of stale popcorn as fresh — but only in the cinema; the same people ate far less stale popcorn in an unfamiliar setting, because the cue was absent (Neal, Wood, Wu & Kremar, 2011) [C4]. The behavior was driven by context, not hunger.
This sits inside a larger truth: much everyday behavior is triggered automatically by the environment (Bargh & Chartrand, 1999) [C3; specific “social priming” demonstrations have failed to replicate and are contested — the general point that environments cue behavior is robust]. Fogg’s model holds that behavior occurs when motivation, ability, and a trigger converge, and that the reliable route to more behavior is to place triggers and remove friction (Fogg, 2009) [C3] — which is why frictionlessness is a habit-engineering strategy, not a courtesy.
The 66-day reality
Habit formation is slower than “21 days” folklore: automaticity plateaued after a median ~66 days (range 18–254), and missing an occasional day did not derail it (Lally et al., 2010) [C3]. Two facts drive the chapter: automaticity is built by repetition in a stable context (why products fight for daily use in the first weeks — the streak, the daily-login bonus), and context stability does the work — so the habit-discontinuity effect makes habits most disruptable when cues change (a move, a new job), and you can manufacture that discontinuity in defense (Wood, Tam & Witt, 2005; Verplanken & Wood, 2006) [C3].
2. Enemy Forces · The Engineered Loop
The cue–routine–reward loop appears here as a design pattern with named techniques bolted onto each stage (Duhigg, 2012 [C3, popular synthesis]; Eyal’s trigger → action → variable reward → investment chain, 2014 [C3]). Cue engineering: notifications and pings (T18.2), “we miss you” re-engagement (T18.11), and withheld-then-flooded bursts (T18.22) are manufactured external cues that train internal ones — boredom or a spare moment becomes the trigger. Frictionless routine: infinite scroll (T18.6) removes the natural stopping cue; autoplay (T18.12) removes the decision to continue. Variable reward: likes and social approval (T18.4), micro-rewards (T18.19) on the variable-ratio schedule that resists extinction. Investment / lock-in: streaks (T18.3) convert quitting into a loss so loss aversion guards the habit; completion loops (T18.20) exploit the unfinished set.
Reading the automaticity: diagnostic signatures
Because a mature habit runs below deliberation, detect it by observable tells: the action precedes the decision (already scrolling before “I will now do this”); no natural endpoint (a session that keeps going = stopping cues removed); persistence despite low or negative value (the stale-popcorn signature); and resistance concentrated mid-routine (brutal to stop while doing it, trivial to skip if the cue never fires). That last asymmetry — hard to stop, easy to not-start — is why the defense targets the cue.

3. Terrain Note · The Honest-Tool Boundary
The habit loop is ethically neutral machinery — the identical cue–routine–reward structure installs a meditation, exercise, saving, or medication-adherence habit a person genuinely wants, and habit science is the most reliable route to durable self-improvement precisely because it moves the desired behavior past daily negotiation with willpower. The distinguishing marks track the governing diagnostic and survive disclosure: an ethical habit tool makes the behavior the user actually chose easy to start and easy to stop, keeps the off-switch visible, and does not manufacture compulsion the user would disown. A manipulative design engineers automaticity around a behavior that serves the designer (time-on-device, spend, data), removes the stopping points, hides the exit, and depends on the user not noticing that a loop has been installed against their interest. The test: does the design still work if it tells you exactly what it is doing to you? Honest tools do; manipulative ones require your inattention.
