Choice overload (or overchoice) is the use of too many options — or too many dimensions of comparison — to induce paralysis, so that a person defaults to a preselected option, accepts the “recommended” one, or gives up deciding altogether. The idea was popularized by Iyengar and Lepper’s much-cited 2000 “jam study,” in which a display of 24 varieties drew more browsers but produced far fewer purchases than a display of 6. The intuition is powerful: beyond some point, more options raise the cost and anxiety of choosing faster than they raise its value.
The effect must be reported honestly, and this entry is rated C3 [contested] for that reason. A large meta-analysis by Scheibehenne, Greifeneder, and Todd (2010) found the overall choice-overload effect close to zero on average, with outcomes swinging on moderators — the choice’s complexity, whether the person has clear preferences, time pressure, and how comparable the options are. Choice overload is therefore real but conditional: it bites hardest when options are hard to compare, the chooser lacks a clear goal, and a convenient default is waiting. That is precisely the environment a manipulative designer can build on purpose, flooding a page with incomparable tiers while spotlighting one profitable “most popular” escape hatch.
Because the mechanism runs on missing criteria and rising comparison cost, the defense is to supply what the flood removes: structure. Deciding your two or three real must-haves before you look lets you filter dozens of options down to a workable shortlist, which restores confident judgment and neutralizes the highlighted default. Overload pairs naturally with default effects and decision fatigue — the flood softens you up so the preselected option lands — so noticing the whole staged environment, and treating paralysis as a cue to pause rather than to grab the rescue option, is the durable countermeasure.
