Incompleteness / Zeigarnik Hook

Curiosity · Open-Loop Pull · Common
Red Flag
How It WorksSEC 01

The incompleteness hook leaves a task, story, or process deliberately open so the unresolved state keeps you mentally returning to it. The observable structure is a loop opened and left unclosed: a partly filled progress bar, an unfinished profile, an interrupted narrative, a running streak, a saved-but-unbought cart.

The unresolved state is meant to occupy the mind between sessions and to make closing the loop feel like relief — which the technique then routes toward whatever action the sender wants: returning to an app, buying, re-engaging, continuing to the next monetized unit. It differs from the curiosity gap, which withholds an answer; the incompleteness hook leaves an action or state unfinished. It is the broader, often non-narrative sibling of the cliffhanger.

The honest / manipulative line: whether the loop, once closed, serves your goal or merely re-hooks you into another open loop. Note the evidence is contested — the classic Zeigarnik recall effect replicates inconsistently, so the pull is real-but-unreliable, not guaranteed.

Warning SignsSEC 02
  • A pull you didn't choose. A nagging urge to return to something unfinished you did not decide to leave open.
  • Meters that serve the platform. Progress bars, streaks, or completeness meters whose "finish" advances their interest more than yours.
  • Cut off before the payoff. A unit interrupted right before resolution, with continuation gated behind time, payment, or re-engagement.
  • Relief doing the deciding. "I just need to close this" driving the choice.
  • Loops that respawn. Loops that reset or spawn new ones the moment you complete them.

How the Hook LandsSEC 04
  • Stage 01 · Open
A loop is opened and left unclosed — a progress bar, streak, saved cart, or interrupted story.
  • Stage 02 · Intrude
The unresolved state stays cognitively active (Zeigarnik), and the goal-gradient sharpens effort as the finish nears.
  • Stage 03 · Discharge
A "close it here" path offers relief — and that path also advances the designer's objective.
Counter-ProtocolSEC 05
Defense: Close the loop yourself.
  • Mark it "done for now." Mentally close the task, story, or streak so the tension discharges without the designer's path.
  • Sort your loops from theirs. Separate goals you set from streaks and meters you didn't ask for, and permit yourself to abandon the latter.
  • Decide on value, not the itch. Continue only when it serves your own aim.
  • Kill the triggers. Disable streak and progress notifications that manufacture urgency.
