Unlike outright fabrication, it starts from something true — a genuine course, a brief affiliation, a narrow certificate — which is exactly what makes it durable: a casual check confirms the kernel and stops there, missing the exaggeration wrapped around it.
The mechanism is authority deference amplified by the halo effect — one impressive-seeming attribute bleeds credibility onto unrelated claims. A weekend workshop becomes “trained at a leading institute”; a single collaboration becomes “worked with”; a niche certificate is presented as broad mastery. Self-issued and unaccredited bodies supply grand-sounding titles on demand, and a long list of them can substitute for any actual bearing on the question at hand.
The reliable test is relevance mapped to scope. Honest expertise stays inside the boundaries of what a credential actually certifies and welcomes the question “what does that specifically qualify you to say here?” Inflation blurs that boundary and grows uncomfortable when asked to pin each claim to the precise qualification meant to support it.

- Read the real role. Behind grand phrasing, establish the concrete function performed — attendee, contributor, or genuine leader.
- Weight results over labels. Give more credit to verifiable outcomes and references than to the volume or grandeur of titles.
