Dopamine scheduling refers to timing the delivery of rewards and cues to maximize compulsive engagement — surfacing the good post, releasing batched reactions, or firing a notification at the moment a user is most likely to be pulled back. It builds on the reward-prediction-error account of dopamine (Schultz): dopamine responses are largest for rewards that are unexpected and better than predicted, so a system that can time a reward to arrive when interest is fading extracts the maximum anticipatory response and the maximum re-hook. Where variable rewards make the payoff unpredictable in kind, scheduling optimizes its unpredictability in time.
Because the tuning happens server-side and is driven by behavioral data, it is nearly invisible to the user and hard to prove from the outside, which is why its confidence rating is moderate rather than established — the underlying reinforcement science is solid, but the specific claim that a given product deliberately times rewards is often inferential. What a user can notice is the pattern: rewards that seem to arrive just as attention wanes, reactions that come in withheld-then-released bursts, and a personal checking rhythm that has quietly synced to the app’s delivery rhythm. There is no honest-use version of tuning cadence against the user’s interest; the ethical line is whether timing serves the user (a reminder when you asked for one) or serves retention.
The defense doesn’t require detecting the schedule — it requires removing what the schedule acts on. Tuned timing only works if you are monitoring for the hit; impose your own fixed checking times, close apps fully, disable badges, and fetch updates on a set interval, and there is nothing for the cadence to entrain. When your rhythm is decided by you in advance, the platform’s timing has no purchase.
