Attention hijacking is interface and content design that captures your attention against your own intent — pulling you off-task and onto surfaces the platform monetizes. It operates through salience (movement, color, sound, badges that exploit the brain’s orienting response) and through the removal of natural stopping points (autoplay, infinite scroll, one-more-item recommendations). Unlike an outright deception, it rarely lies; it simply arranges the environment so that the path of least resistance leads away from what you came to do and toward more time on the platform.
The harm is ambient rather than acute. Any single interruption is trivial — a glance at a notification, one more autoplayed clip — but the technique’s business logic is to repeat that diversion thousands of times, converting fragmented attention into ad impressions and engagement data. The cost shows up downstream as lost focus, task-switching overhead, and time that evaporates without a decision ever having been consciously made. That invisibility is what makes it dangerous: there is no single moment to say no to, because the design never presents a clear choice.
Defense reverses the two mechanisms. Kill the triggers — silence machine-generated notifications and badges so the interruptions stop reaching you — and reinstall the stopping points the interface removed, by disabling autoplay and continuous scroll so that continuing becomes an act rather than a default. Setting an explicit intent before opening an app turns everything outside that task into recognizable noise. The governing principle: attention you did not decide to spend was taken, not given.
