How It WorksSEC 01

Incremental honesty is the release of truth in metered stages so that a target’s trust and commitment grow together, with each disclosure timed to arrive only after a little more has been invested. Paced disclosure is legitimate and often necessary — you don’t share everything on day one. The manipulation is in engineering the sequence so that the information you’d need to decide is always withheld until commitment has already advanced past the point where leaving is easy.

The tactic couples the trust-through-consistency effect with commitment-and-escalation dynamics. Each staged reveal reads as growing candor and renews the target’s patience, while the accumulating investment activates sunk-cost reasoning: continuing feels cheaper than abandoning what you’ve already put in. Investment schemes and romance fraud lean on this heavily, drip-feeding “good news” and partial truths to keep a target advancing.

The diagnostic is whether disclosure precedes commitment or trails it. Honest paced disclosure still puts the material facts on the table before you decide; incremental honesty keeps them just out of reach until deciding-to-leave has grown expensive. Require the load-bearing information before each commitment, decide on what’s true now rather than on what you’ve already spent, and treat truth that unfolds precisely in step with your involvement as the tell it is.

Warning SignsSEC 02
  • Truth arrives conveniently late. Each new disclosure lands only after you've committed a bit more, never before.
  • "There's more I can share now." Access to information is framed as a reward for deepening involvement.
  • Material facts withheld pre-decision. The things you'd need to decide are always "coming," never available at the point of commitment.
  • Each reveal renews trust. Every staged disclosure feels like growing candor, resetting your patience for the next stage.
  • Rising sunk costs. By the time the full picture arrives, you've invested enough that walking away feels costlier than continuing.

How the Drip WorksSEC 04
  • Stage 01 · Meter
Only a partial truth is shared up front — enough to justify a small first commitment, not enough to decide fully.
  • Stage 02 · Reward
Each deeper commitment unlocks the next disclosure, so growing involvement feels like growing trust.
  • Stage 03 · Trap
By the time material facts emerge, accumulated sunk costs make exiting feel more expensive than pressing on.
Counter-ProtocolSEC 05
Defense: Require full material disclosure before you commit — trust that arrives on a drip is metering, not candor.
  • Demand full disclosure first. Insist on the material facts *before* committing; refusal to provide them at decision-time is the answer.
  • Treat staged reveals as a flag. Truth that unfolds exactly in step with your commitment is a structure, not a coincidence.
  • Ignore sunk costs. Decide each step on what's true now and what's ahead, not on what you've already put in.
  • Set a disclosure deadline. Name the information you need and a date; if it keeps sliding, stop advancing.
