Emotion finished in 0.4 seconds. Reason finished in 3.6 seconds.
By the time the slow brain arrived to ask is this even true, you had already felt something, shared the post, donated, voted, agreed. The headline did its work in the 3.2-second gap. That gap is the technique.

Why it works

Emotion is, by design, faster than thought. The brain you have is built so that strong feelings take the steering wheel from the slow brain in moments when speed matters more than deliberation. The car running into the road, the predator behind the rock, the baby you must protect — these are situations in which the slow brain's careful evaluation would have produced your death.

The manipulator's move is to manufacture the emotional state, then to extract the decision while you are in the state. The state is doing the work the slow brain would normally do. The decision is being made by the part of you that is, in that moment, configured for survival — not for verification.

This is the most general technique in the book. Almost every other primitive is, in part, a way to produce an emotional state. Urgency produces fear of loss. Love-bombing produces infatuation. The political fear campaign produces anger. The financial pitch produces greed. The romance scam produces all of them.

What it sounds like

  • I don't know what I would do without you.
  • They're trying to destroy us.
  • If you really cared about me, you would.
  • Time is running out — for all of us.
  • Your kids are at risk if you don't.
  • I'm so disappointed in you.

Where you will see it

  • Romance fraud. The Tinder Swindler arc: intense love → invented crisis → urgent financial requests → wreckage. The FBI tracks more than a billion dollars in reported losses to romance scams in the U.S. annually.
  • Doomscrolling and rage media. The platforms have learned that anger, fear, and outrage produce the highest engagement. Their algorithms surface what they produce.
  • Political fear campaigns. Our way of life is ending. Identical structure across the spectrum; only the targets change.
  • Cult retreats. Seventy-two continuous hours of meaningful-sounding insights and sleep restriction. Decisions made at the end are made by a slow brain that has been offline for days.
  • Interrogation. Fear approach, love approach, pride approach, ego approach. All cataloged in the U.S. Army's HUMINT manual. All forms of emotional hijacking.

How to defend

The state rule

Do not commit to anything that involves money, agreement, or major life change while you are in a state of intense fear, intense excitement, intense grief, intense love, intense anger, or intense embarrassment. If the state continues, the decision continues to wait. The decision can be made when the state has passed.

Almost every catastrophic personal decision an adult makes is made in one of those states. Almost no catastrophic decision survives twenty-four hours of the state having passed.
